MEDUSA Magazine issue#1

Hello and welcome to the first issue of the nearly headless magazine!!! Tadat on halloween, start your good hellish day with a bit of Medusa!!!

Medusa  was one of the three Gorgons daughters of Phorcys   and Ceto , sisters of the Graeae, Echidna , and Ladon  – all dreadful and fearsome beasts. A beautiful mortal, Medusa was the exception in the family, until she incurred the wrath of Athena , either due to her boastfulness or because of an ill-fated love affair with Poseidon. Transformed into a vicious monster with snakes for hair, she was killed by Perseus, who afterward used her still potent head as a weapon, before gifting it to Athena. 

Medusa is considered a Gorgon and according to Hesiod's Theogony, the Gorgons were the sisters of the Graiai or Graeae. Medusa was the only mortal out of her two other sisters who were the monstrous goddesses, Stheno and Euryale.

It is said that if someone were to look Medusa in the eye for even just a moment, they would be petrified, literally, and turned to stone. It's one of the most well-known aspects of Medusa's character and is part of the reason she's considered a protector with the ability to ward off evil spirits.  Her other famous feature is her head of hair made of live snakes. 

According to , in northwest Africa, Perseus flew past the , who stood holding the sky aloft, and transformed him into stone when he tried to attack him. In a similar manner, the of the were said to have been formed of Medusa's blood spilled onto seaweed when Perseus laid down the petrifying head beside the shore during his short stay in where he saved and wed his future wife, the lovely princess who was the most beautiful woman in the world at that time. Furthermore, the poisonous vipers of the , in the 4.1515, Ovid's 4.770 and Lucan's 9.820, were said to have grown from spilt drops of her blood. The blood of Medusa also spawned the (a horned dragon-like creature with a snake-headed tail).

Perseus then flew to Seriphos, where his mother was being forced into marriage with the king, Polydectes, who was turned into stone by the head. Then Perseus gave the Gorgon's head to Athena, who placed it on her shield, the .

The petrifying image of Medusa makes an instantly recognizable feature in popular culture. Medusa has been featured in several works of fiction, including video games, movies, cartoons and books. In particular, the designer 's symbol is reflected through the Medusa-head symbol. It was chosen because she represents beauty, art, and philosophy.
